Ok, its just early October, but maybe it’s time to take a look back at 2025 and then forward into next year. This has been a challenging year with low commodity prices and weather extremes. Our only hope this year has been for above average yields and controlling costs.
The NC State Dept. of Ag Resources and Economics has developed a tool to compare the expense and profitability of our major field crops side by side. With this tool you can look at their best guess for expenses or you can input your own. You can even input your land rent. In addition, you can adjust commodity prices, yields and commodity basis. Be warned, this does not paint a pretty picture for 2025, but you already knew that. It may also provide a talking point with landlords for next year’s rental negotiation. You can use this crop comparison tool as a guide for your operation. The tool is in an excel format. Be sure to click on the tab marked crop comparison to get started. The additional tabs give information about county and state average yields. Finally, you can get a total farm prospective by going to the 2nd tab and entering the acres of each crop you intend to grow. This feature can really help with total farm planning. If you have any questions about this tool or the numbers used, please reach out to Edward or Billy at 252 794-5317.
