As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the global economy, a new partnership in Bertie County is ensuring rural residents aren't left behind. Fybe and the Bertie County Cooperative Extension have joined forces for their second public-private partnership: a four-part "Lunch and Learn" series titled Exploring AI.
The series kicks off on March 26, 2026, aiming to demystify how AI tools can be used as practical resources for students, families, and local businesses.
Skills for the Modern World
The curriculum is designed to be inclusive for all ages, featuring programming created by Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), a charitable offshoot of AARP. Led by Rebecca Jinnette, Bertie’s NC Digital Futures Agent, the workshops focus on two critical areas:
- Practical Application: Equipping participants with the skills to use AI tools responsibly in their daily lives.
- Digital Literacy: Helping residents recognize AI-generated content to better navigate misinformation and disinformation.
“Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept reserved for big cities,” says Bo Coughlin, President of Fybe’s parent company, eNCore. “It is a practical tool that, when understood, can level the playing field for rural communities”.
Empowering the Community
The initiative is part of a broader vision for the NC Digital Futures Program: ensuring every individual in North Carolina—whether on a farm, in a household, or in business—has the digital skills to "EARN, LEARN, BE WELL, and LIVE WELL".
By providing this education at no cost, the organizers hope to close the local skills gap. "We want to ensure local residents aren't just spectators in the tech revolution, but active participants," says Kenneth Sherin of the N.C. Cooperative Extension.

The events are free and open to the public, regardless of residency. A catered lunch is provided to all attendees, though space is limited.
