Grain crops accounted for approximately 47,000 acres or 41% of the reported acreage in Bertie County in 2025, with soybeans taking the lead with approximately 31,000 acres. Prices last year were below or, at best, hovering at breakeven most of the growing season. However, there were opportunities to price both corn and soybeans over $5.00 and $10.00, respectively. In addition, there was a positive basis most of the year, the difference between the futures price and the local elevator price, which added to the price opportunity.
The timing of price opportunities is always difficult. What are the pricing points, what are the price potentials, and when should you lock in the price? There are several critical factors, including supply and demand, crop intended usage, carryover, planting intentions, and weather, to name a few. Knowing the cost of production is critical for farmers. Not just an average for the state or region, but for your particular farm.
