The campers had the pleasure of touring Steve Mizelle's family farm on July 28th with Ag Agent Edward Godfrey. Despite the scorching heat, we all enjoyed the experience immensely. Steve and his family were very kind to us.

During our first stop, we visited the barn and had the opportunity to interact with some horses and Jersey cows. Mr. Mizelle's daughter Brittany provided a demonstration on how to use an automatic milker to milk a cow. The campers shared their experience at Simply Natural Creamery and discussed some of the things they learned there with the Mizelle family. The campers were amazed at how fast a cow could be milked. Later, a horse was brought out for the campers to pet, and many of them enjoyed the soft, velvety texture of the horse's nose.

Brittany returned with several jars of fresh heavy cream, she taught the campers how to make homemade butter. Although some of the campers had made butter before during 4-H cooking camp, they were impressed with how quickly her method produced results. This prompted a discussion about the differences between store-bought milk and milk straight from the cow, providing a valuable teaching moment.

We hopped into the van and drove to a new area of the farm where we were greeted by some friendly goats named Bonnie and Clyde. The two babies were incredibly adorable, with one still needing to be bottle-fed. The campers had a blast petting them, and one of the goats took a liking to a camper. Whenever the camper ran, the goat would chase after him! We also got to see some donkeys and pigs in a nearby field.

Once everyone had finished enjoying their time with the goats, we journeyed on to our next destination, Powell & Stokes - the home of Bertie County Peanuts. Mr. Powell kindly invited us inside and shared a video about peanut farming, explaining the various techniques involved. As we were departing, Mr. Powell generously gifted us with a sample bag of Bertie County Peanuts.

At the end of the morning, we returned to the Cooperative Extension where the parents were eagerly waiting to pick up their campers. The children enthusiastically shared with their parents all the exciting activities and experiences they had encountered.
