Collapse ▲Healthy eating and active lifestyles are essential to long-term well-being. When children begin learning these habits early, they are more likely to carry them into adulthood and even pass them on for generations to come.

Students try parfaits
Last Friday, Toniqua, the 4-H Agent, partnered with Bertie Middle School to provide a lesson for their Healthy Living Club. The class included 20 enthusiastic students who were eager to learn about nutritious eating and try new foods.
The session began with an introduction to MyPlate, where students explored the different food groups and learned about balanced portions in a meal. We also discussed the pros and cons of various cooking methods, such as baked, fried, and grilled, and how each affects our health. The group then talked about the importance of regular exercise and discovered that many students prefer playing sports over simple walks for staying active.

Students practicing knife-cutting skills
To wrap up the day, students put their new skills to use by making healthy parfaits. They practiced basic knife-cutting techniques, which was something new for many of them! They then created their own individual parfaits using fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, granola, and a touch of honey for sweetness.
We look forward to our next club day with these motivated and curious youth as they continue their journey toward healthier living!
