Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer Association of Carteret County will present their annual speaker program free to the public on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. Featured speaker, Gabriele Onorato a former manager of Open Grounds Farms will speak about, “Modern Agricultural Practices and their Relationship to Local Gardeners.”

Onorato, an agronomics specialist, lives and gardens in Carteret County. He will share how his years of work with agronomics, which is the branch of economics that deals with the distribution, management, and productivity of land can be functional for the smaller gardener/farmer. In addition to having previously managed Open Grounds Farm here in Carteret County, Onorato has direct farming experience for agricultural lands on multiple continents. He has managed large agricultural projects in the United States, Russia, Argentina, and Italy. He is a partner at International Farming Corporation, a privately owned institutional investment company that specializes in the agricultural sector.

Onorato is a licensed Crop Consultant and is a member of various state and national agricultural societies and associations. He served on the Integrated Pest Management Committee at NC State University and is a member of NC Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler’s “Agriculture Commissioner Circle.” Fluent in Italian, Spanish, and English, he holds a degree in Agricultural Science from the University of Sassari, Italy.

Following the program attendees will have the opportunity to choose a native plant to take home. Choices will include river birch, nine bark, bald cypress, and elderberry, in one or two-gallon containers. Plants have been supplied by Edible Yards Nursery in Otway. The cost of the plants is funded by the Master Gardener Volunteer’s Annual April Plant Sale held at the Beaufort Historical Association grounds on Turner Street.
