Question:

Do you calculate HUA/GDD from the day of planting or day of emergence?

Jordan:

We use day of emergence. Our reasoning is that peanuts can emerge in 5 days in early June or 7-10 days in early to mid May. I have had instances where it took 21 days. By considering heat unit accumulation based on when they emerge, it eliminates the roughly 15 day or so swing relative to emergence that can happen in a growing season relative to planting and weather conditions surrounding it.

Folks before me were using emergence, so I have stayed with that. I’ve had several instances where a reviewer of a paper will ask the same question. It is a good one relative to what often happens with other crops.
We often have a range of planting depths that can contribute to the pace of emergence as well. Generally minor but measurable.
